Finance in the curriculum

Finance can be taken as a major on either the Bachelor of Commerce (Westville and Pietermaritzburg) or Bachelor of Business Science (Westville only) programmes. A coursework honours in Finance and a Masters by research in Finance are options at a postgraduate level. Many of our Finance students go on to write the CFA exams.

An undergraduate major in Finance involves two years of study, starting in the second-year with Finance 201 and Finance 202, and culminating at the third-year level with four modules, namely:

o   Capital Market Theory,

o   Financial Risk Management ,

o   Corporate Financial Management,

o   Quantitative Economics.

The Bachelor of Commerce Honours in Business Finance and Bachelor of Business Science 4th year Finance curricula comprise the following:

A major in Finance can lead to a career in Banking (commercial, corporate or investment banking) or Financial Management in both the private and public sector, Asset Management, Stockbroking, and Financial Advisors etc. Many of our Finance majors, particularly those who go on to complete a fourth or honours year in Finance, secure placements with the major banks, investment institutions and large corporates.
